I always choose to go mail in repairs in the US now unless I have to take it to Apple. Stores routinely send out involved repairs (and battery repairs on Macs are very involved now) - harder to do than a logic board or display swap or storage / RAM fix. Staffing in the stores is geared to helping people and diagnosing - not fixing. You have no control over how many other people drop their machines off for the same repair as yours between now and when you deliver yours for service.

This is why I'm a strong proponent of having a backup strategy that goes beyond Time Machine you back up your data in multiple places so if you're without a Mac for an extended period, you can continue to work even if the temporary machine isn't Apple. Having technician and parts availability is a complex process and (IMO) this is not Apple's wheelhouse. They are usually inundated with iPhone/iPad repairs mostly, then computer repairs. There are only a couple/three technicians that are actually qualified (by Apple) to do the repair. It's important to remember, Apple Stores are set up to sell new products - they are not a repair facility. If it takes more than a day, you can bet it is because they don't have the parts available. However, the total process can take up to a week or more depending on where you are in the repair queue and parts availability.
In fact, it's a very simple repair and takes approximately 30 mins from start to completion. Technically speaking, the repair "can" be done in a day. I know the company is reputable, but I don't know if that's the ultimate cost of a battery replacement with Apple direct, or whether a 'battery service' implies replacement, or whether supplying a replacement then costs additional. I managed to find a 3rd party Apple authorised service centre who have quoted me $399 for a battery replacement (not a 'service' per say) and that I can drop it off on this coming Wednesday. only thanks to covid everything is booked out for the foreseeable future. Thinking I'd rather Apple did the job, and that it's only a possible additional $89, I tried to book a time to bring it in. We might need to test your product to determine the final service fee. These prices are for out-of-warranty service. But this doesn't state that the battery will be replaced necessarily. They list a 'Battery Service' for a 2015 15" rMBP as costing $289. The alternative would be to get Apple to do it. I'd also then need to swap the battery myself. So if I do it myself it'd cost about $200 AUD for the battery, then I'd need to source the solvent myself. and I'd prefer get as close to the original battery capacity as possible so would prefer to opt for the iFixit battery. and of course, I can't buy the solvent separately. Macfixit are another mob in Australia who actually have a similar kit to the US iFixit store.īut the battery they supply is only 95Wh, instead of 99.5Wh. They did advise that the solvent is a mixture of acetone and rubbing alcohol, but I don't know the ratio. I reached out to iFixit and they said they can't supply the same kit that's available in the US Store. I've already got a sufficient tools but am specifically lacking the solvent to dissolve the adhesive. Problem is, in Australia the local iFixit store stocks the same model battery, but does not supply any of the other kit. So I looked up the iFixit guide and found the relevant battery replacement kit which comes with everything required to change the battery, including the solvent to dissolve the battery adhesive. I recently repasted my CPU/GPU and noticed that the battery was just starting to swell.
But periodically it say 'Service Battery'. Right now it's still showing normal on the battery health icon, iStat and coconut battery. Currently at 79% health it can go from 50% to 0% invoking an auto-hibernation, and then won't turn on again until I connect it to the power brick, whereupon it immediately shows 50% remaining. My beloved rMBP is showing battery deterioration.
